The chief place of interest in Bahraich is the Mausoleum of Saiyyad Salar Masaud, who was the son of Salar Sahu and the nephew of Mahmud of Ghani. It was here he met his death in 1303 AD, after the defeat at the hands of King Suheldev and his forces. It is said to have occupied the site of a former temple of the Sun God. It is also said that the dargah was built by Zohra Bibi, the blind daughter of Saiyid Jamal-ud-din of Rudauli, in Barabanki District, after she had regained her eyesight by a pilgrimage to this Mausoleum. She also built a tomb for herself here, and when she died, she was buried here. Her mother & other relatives made a pilgrimage to her grave yearly, performing a ceremony like that of marriage. The pilgrimage gradually gained importance & the tomb became a sacred place over a period of time.
In the year 1375 AD, Emperor Firoz Shah visited Bahraich, and is said to have built the compound wall and other buildings at this place. There was then a saint called Mir Mah residing here on whom the emperor bestowed favours. He also gave a jagir for maintenance of the shrine. The tomb of Mir Mah stands close by and is considered a sacred place. According to another account the tomb was built by Malik Nasir-ud-din Muhammad, the eldest son of Sultan Shams-ud-din Altamash.
A large fair is held at Dargah in early May & June and is attended by thousands of people from far places. They offer a variety of offerings at this shrine. A very picturesque feature of the fair is, the flags brought by the pilgrims. It is said that if the pilgrim's desire has not been fulfilled, he takes away the flag but if the request has been granted the flag is left at the shrine. The administration of the Dargah is maintained by a Committee which also manages the annual fair & other functions held here. A hospital, Musafirkhana (Guest house) & many educational Institutions are also managed by the Dargah Sharif Committee.

Sravasti was one of the six great cities of India in the days of the Buddha. An important centre for trade and commerce, it was the junction of two important trade routes.

It was the capital of the kingdom of Kosala, one of the two great monarchies of the 6th century b.c. Maghadha was the another monarchy. The Kosalan rulers extended the boundaries of the kingdom in all directions at the expense of their neighbours. The Sakyas (the clan to which the Buddha belonged) in the Nepalese foothills and the kingdom of Kasi (Varanasi) were also absorbed into the Kosalan kingdom. The most powerful Kosalan king was Prasenjit. However, the imperialist tendencies of Kosala were checked by the rise of the powerful kingdom of Magadha in South Bihar.
The ancient city of Sravasti, which is now represented by a series of mounds and covers an extensive area, known as Sahet-Mahet together with ancient sites- Orajhar, Panahiajhar and Kharahuwanjhar, is located in the newly created district of Sravasti, while a portion of it falls in the district of Balrampur, U.P. It is one of the main sites of Buddhist Pilgrimage as well as Jain Pilgrimage. Sahet is located in the very heart of Sravasti while Mahet is located 1 km North-East of Sahet. The earliest references of the city are available in Ramayana & Mahabharata as a prosperous city in the Kingdom of Kosala. It was the capital of North Kosala as mentioned in Puranas. The city is also mentioned in Panini’s Ashtadhyayi and in Pali Literature. The Town was founded by Sravasta, a king of Solar dynasty. In later times, it was known as Chandrikapuri and Champakpuri. Anguttara Nikaya mentions Kosala as one of the 16 Mahajanpada’s. Sravasti was not only the capital of a powerful Kingdom but was also a home for Philosophical speculations, where a number of Schools of thoughts had already established themselves before the advent of Buddha.

In 6th Century B.C. during the reign of Prasenjit, the place became famous due to its association with Buddha and Mahavir. Age old Stupas, majestic monasteries and several Temples in Sahet-Mahet area highlight the association of Buddha with Sravasti. After attaining enlightenment Lord Buddha was constantly moving and spreading his message of humanity, Universal Brotherhood & Salvation among different segments of the society, Buddha is said to have spent 24 Rainy season (Monsoon) here, after his disciple Sudatta Anathpindika built a monastery for him at Jetvana. He delivered many Sermons here and it was here only where is he supposed to have astonished rival teachers by performing miracles. A dacoit named Angulimal was transformed to a monk by Buddha here only. The City also has the pride in being the place where Vinay Rule, Jatakas and Sutras were first discovered.
Sravasti is also believed to be the birthplace of two Jain Tirthankars- Sambhavnath and Chandra Prabha. Lord Sambhavnath is believed to have taken Diksha at Sahatuk forest (hence Sahet) in the vicinity of Sravasti and went through hard penance till he attained the light of true knowledge in the same forest.
King Ashoka is said to have visited the place and erected two pillars on the eastern gate of Jetvana and Stupa in the vicinity. The place was also mentioned by Fa-hein and Hiuen-Tsang in their travel accounts (5th century B.C. and 7th century B.C. respectively). The ruins of Sravasti were excavated by Sir Alexander Cunningham and Hoey in 1863. Cunningham’s discoveries included several small Stupas and Temples in Sahet. In 1876, he identified the Jetvana monastery (Sahet) and discovered 10 temples, 5 Stupas, Number of Clay Seals, Votive offerings and few fragments of sculpture but no inscriptions.

Shravasti, the north-eastern town of Uttar Pradesh, is located near the West Rapti River. This town is closely associated with the life of Gautama Buddha, who is believed to have spent 24 Chaturmases here. Age-old stupas, majestic viharas and several temples near the village of "Sahet-Mahet" establish Buddha's association with Shravasti. It is being said that the Vedic Bharat period king Sravast founded this town. Shravasti was the capital of the Kosala Kingdom during 6th century BC to 6th century AD. This prosperous trading center was well known for its religious associations. Sobhanath temple is believed to be the birthplace of the Tirthankara Sambhavanath in Jainism, making Shravasti an important center for Jains. According to Nagarjuna, the city had a population of 900,000 in 5th century BCE and it even overshadowed Magadha's capital, Rajgir.
As mentioned in the 'Bruhatkalpa' and various Kalpas of the fourteenth century, the name of the city was Mahid. There are subsequent mentions showing that the name of this city was Sahet-Mahet. It is also mentioned that a vast fort covered this city in which there were many temples having idols of Devkulikas.
Today a great rampart of earth and brick surrounds this city. During excavation in 'Sahet-Mahet' near Shravasti City, many ancient idols and inscriptions were found. They are now kept in museums of Mathura and Lucknow. At present, the archaeological department of the Indian Government is doing excavation to perform allied research. Attractions of Shravasti -Today the ruins of Jetavana's several monasteries are set in attractive and peaceful gardens. The Buddha delivered far more discourses right here than in every other place so should you wish to study some although that you are you've plenty to choose from. Recommended ones would be the Kakacupama Sutta, the Vimamsaka Sutta and or the Angulimala Sutta, all of them in the Center Length Discourses. You can find plenty of Buddhist temples near the ruins that offer accommodation. Possibly the best will be the Sri Lankan temple correct subsequent towards the principal gate. Do not skip the paintings within the principal shrine.
Excavations at Sravasti have also revealed two pillars raised here by Emperor Ashoka, the great Indian King who was largely responsible for spreading the word of Buddhism. The pillars, which lie at the eastern gate of Jetavana, mark Ashoka's pilgrimage to the city.
Essentially a temple town, Sravasti will take one back in time, bring somewhat closer to the soul of a civilization which has been there, for five thousand years, or more.

Sravasti has two villages, Sahet and Mahet. From the Balrampur-Sravasti road one can enter Sahet, which is spread over an area of 400 acres and has a number of ruins. A little north of Sahet, towards the Rapti River, is the ancient fortified city of Mahet. The entrance to the mud fortification of Mahet is constructed in a beautiful crescent shape. Though an ancient structure, its five gates and walls are still visible. Pakki Kuti, Kuchhi Kuti and many other stupas tell the story of the great monasteries that once stood here.

Remnants of Jetavana, a splendid monastery with inscriptions dating back to the 12th century, is thought to be one of the favourite sites of the Buddha. Emperor Ashoka is also said to have visited this site. There is a sacred pipal tree here, which is a sapling from the original Maha Bodhi tree under which the Buddha had attained nirvana. Today, Jetavana has two monasteries, six temples and five stupas. One temple was built by the monk Ananthapindika and called Gandhakuti. This is the most sacred temple in Jetavana since the Buddha is believed to have lived at this spot.

Sravasti was also under the influence of Lord Mahavira the last Jain Tirthankar, and the splendid Shwetambara temple here attracts thousands of Jain pilgrims. The Sobhnath Temple is believed to the birthplace of the Jain Tirthankar Sambhavnath.

Sravasti Trip

It has the distinction of being a place where the Buddha preached most of his sermons. Here he is said to have performed many miracles, and levitated. During the monsoon, he used to stay at the Jetavana monastery on the outskirts of this town. The monastery was donated to him by Sudatta, the richest merchant at the time. Ashoka visited the place in the 3rd century a.d. and issued an inscription to commemorate the event.

The extensive ruins of this great city now cover the villages of Saheth and Maheth. The architectural ruins of the stupas, or Buddhist temples and the Jetavana monastery are found at Sahet. The earliest of these dates back to the 3rd century b.c. Mahet is on the right bank of the Achiravati River. The village contains the remains of two stupas, some temples, the city gate and ramparts.

Attractions :PLACES TO SEE

Maheth: 400 acres of land is covered by Maheth. This place contains the relics of an ancient city. By means of archaeological excavations one came to discover the huge city gates, the ramparts and the remnants of the other several architectures, which speaks of the former splendor and affluence of Sravasti.

One can find the temple of Sobhanath here as well as the Buddhist shrines named Pakki Kuti and Kacchi Kuti. However, those shrines got transformed to Brahmanical temples.

Sobhanath Temple: This location is considered to be the location, where Jain Tirthankar Sambhavnath was born. This place is respected and adored by the Jain pilgrims.

Saheth: 32 acres of land is covered by Saheth. The distance between this place and Maheth is a quarter of a mile. This was the location for the monastery called Jetavana monastery. It came to be a significant location for pilgrims, which contained several places for worship, stupas and monasteries. The existence of these stupas can be traced back to the time period of the Kushanas. The temples have been constructed in the Gupta Style of architecture.

The Ananda Bodhi tree : This tree, under which Lord Buddha Meditated for a night, is said to bless the devotees who meditate under it as it was specialized by Lord Buddha himself.

Jetavana : The Jetavana is said to once host Lord Buddha and his pilgrims, where One of his followers, a rich merchant, covered the whole ground of the park (vana) with gold coins. Lord Buddha used tehse coins to build a Vihara here. While there are stories that Jet Vana once housed a giant seven-storied-building, some others believe that the first statue of Lord Buddha was built here. Whatever the story, in reality, the place is a cool and peaceful alternative to forget any other care of life and this, makes one believe the facts that are running as folklore among the local community. There are, however, some sculptures built by The Ashoka which are nonetheless less attractive than other monuments built by him.

The ancient temple built by an old Chinese monk is also part of tourist attraction, due to the story attached to it.
